A New Chapter

Postby Vladigar Wolfpaws » Tue Apr 20, 2004 9:09 am

The wind whipped at Vladigar’s cloak. How many times had he stood at this spot, overlooking the Great Divide, thinking on times past and friends long gone. Vladigar drew his cloak closer to him but it did little to shelter him from the brutal Velious wind. He once thought there was no colder place in Norrath than the Peaks of Everfrost. His first expedition to the Velious continent had proved him wrong, not that it mattered much to a son of Halas. Vladigar chuckled to himself, thinking of poor Nazluk. Even with the cold protection spell Vladigar would cast on him, the burly troll warrior never stopped shivering during their adventures here.

A movement from the west caught Vladigar’s eye and he quickly stepped into a crevice in the ice wall. A Coldain wolfmaster and his pet were patrolling the outskirts of Thurgadin, the home of the Coldain dwarves. They posed no threat to Vladigar, as he had grown quite powerful in the shaman magics. Just the same, he had no desire to spill more Coldain blood. His fight with the Coldain ended over a year and a half ago, but he had no doubts he was still wanted for crimes against the Dain. As they neared his position, the wolf began to sniff the air as if he had caught a scent. Vladigar tightened his grip on his spear and readied himself for a fight. However, the wolfmaster apparently had other concerns and he turned the wolf back toward the waterfall which hid the entrance to the underground city. “No doubt to get a jump on the evening’s ale consumption,” Vladigar thought to himself.

His thoughts turned once again to his friends. Had it only been 4 years since that fateful day he had walked into a Freeport tavern to sign up with a motley band of fortune-hunters? The “Association of Adventurers” they called themselves. What an association it was! Any previous guilds Vladigar had known ‘till then had been fairly race homogenous. Humans, Barbarians and the occasional Erudite had banded together to keep the Blackburrow gnolls at bay and to patrol the great plains of the Karanas. Occasionally one would see a dwarf or an elf, or if you were unlucky, a halfling. This guild, however, was the most diverse he had seen.

The trolls stood out the most. Nazluk, the warrior, Gruko and Kambuk, the shaman, and Gadfly, the shadow knight. Something about Gadfly had unnerved Vladigar. He knew immediately this was not a troll to be trifled with. Dagon and Popollo, the dwarven clerics, were seated at a table covered by empty mugs arguing with each other over whether the best quality of the ale was its flavor or its heaviness. At another table, figures in robes huddled over an assortment of gems and creature parts. Zarkon and Llysar, High Elves, and Amygdala, an Erudite, were dividing up spell components. Behind the wizards, two monks were sitting on the floor in deep meditation. It was an unusual sight in itself, monks in a tavern, but Vladigar couldn’t contain his shock at the fact that one of the monks was an Iksar. He would later learn the monk’s name was Kracs and that he served at the Temple of Molasar - a secret sect that was rumored to be more diabolical than the Iksars’ own god, Cazic Thule. The other monk, Hiwei, was a human from Qeynos. His appearance was almost as shocking due to the “flamboyant” nature of his garments. “Looks like a gaudy pirate costume,” Vladigar thought to himself.

To Vladigar’s surprise, the leader of the guild was a half-elf. He had seen half elves before during his visits to Surefall Glade, but they were rangers or druids and generally scorned among the pure humans. This one, however, was a paladin. “We have a loose structure here, “ he said. “I accepted command merely because a guild needs a front man. Everyone here has an equal voice in guild decisions. We do not get involved in petty politics. We are bound together by the thrill of adventure. However, we will not tolerate malcontents. Take care of the guild and the guild will take care of you.” Mills stood up. “Oh, one other thing,” said Mills with an evil grin. “If you have any complaints, see Gadfly.” As Mills walked to the bar, Vladigar cast another glance at the shadow knight convincing himself that should he ever have a complaint, it best be a damned good one.

They swept across Norrath like a blizzard. Campaigns against the undead Frogloks of Sebilis, the Sarnaks, the Coldain, the dragons of Veeshan’s Peak and even the Temple of Veeshan itself fell to the AoA. Other members were added to the ranks - Thar, his warrior blood brother, Eshkoshka the half-elven ranger, Kalday the dwarf cleric, Noso the wood elf druid and many others that had heard the call of adventure.

As time changes all things, so did the guild. Like the ocean crashing against the shore the campaign began to take its toll on the guild. Friends were lost in battle. Brothers fought over the spoils. Trusted comrades turned their backs on those with whom they had stood side by side in the face of overwhelming odds. Most of the guild elders retired. The guild’s status as operational was revoked. Those that were left were scattered across Norrath or its moon. That had been a year and a half ago. He still heard from some of them from time to time. Just the other day he received a letter from Gadfly informing him of his upcoming wedding. “May the Tribunal save that poor female,” Vladigar thought to himself.

The thunderous footsteps of a giant snapped Vladigar back to the present. Thankful he was still in the crevice, he stole a glance around the edge of the wall. A Kromrif Warlord stood overlooking the area of the Coldain patrols. Though he was once allied with the giants of Kael Drakkal, he was certain that little incident in the Wakening Lands had lost him some favor with King Tormax. The Kromrif was no more a threat to him than the Coldain but Vladigar had not come to this place to pick a fight. He had come to make a decision.

As the giant stomped away, Vladigar stepped out of the crevice and pulled an envelope from his tunic. He held it for a moment as he turned his gaze back toward the frozen wasteland. His days with the Association of Adventurers were the most special to him, but those days had passed. There were new realms to explore and new adventures to be had. Glory wasn’t achieved by sitting on your arse. “It’s time,” he said to himself and broke the envelope’s seal. It was imprinted with three letters – MLF.

[65 Prophet] Vladigar (Barbarian) ZONE:castleanthrax
