General Loot Policy (Updated)

Post by Jorrell »

(Last updated: 11/2/2007)

This loot policy is point based and will only apply on official raids organized by the Mystical Lightfighters. This is a Vickrey sealed bidding system with a minimum bid.

Generally, members will receive between 5 - 20 DKP for each raid they attend, depending on the difficulty and length of the raid. Initiates receive full DKP during their initiate period for raids that they attend; however the points cannot be used until the initiate becomes a full member, except in the limited circumstances provided below. There is no cap on the number of points an initiate or member may accrue.

You may only bid the total amount of points that are listed under your name on the DKP roster at the time of the applicable raid. You may not bid points that have been earned for raids that have not yet been entered into DKP.

If you drop off the active roster on DKP (no raids in a 3 week period) for any reason, (1) you will not be eligible to loot any drops from named kills on any raid you attend on the first day back on which you raid, and (2) you will be deemed an "Inactive Main" and not an "Active Main" until after you have completed your first raid after dropping off of DKP. (DKP will automatically move you to inactive status as it tracks raid attendance.)

In addition, if a full member has not logged in or attended a raid (based on DKP attendance) in a three-month period or longer, (1) that member cannot claim or bid on items that drop in raids until the member attends at least four raids held on four separate days within a four week period, and (2) that member will be deemed an "Inactive Main". That member will then become eligible to claim again (and will become an "Active Main" again) beginning on the fifth day on which they attend a raid, as long as the raids from the four previous, separate days on which they raided have been entered into DKP.

This is not meant to punish anyone, but rather, to reward people who are newer members actively raiding. This is a fairness issue. Even while on inactive status, you will continue to earn points for raids attended as a regular member that first day back, you just cant spend any.

WAITLIST
  • * If a raid is full, any member that joins the waitlist will receive the same dkp for that raid that they would have received had they actually attended the raid. In order to join the waitlist, you need to let the raid or RL know that you would like to join the raid, and then you must accept a raid invite or group invite into the "waitlist group" in the raid (i.e., any group beyond the first 54 persons in raid). While you are on the waitlist, you must stay in the raid (in the waitlist group) to receive dkp.

    * As spaces open up in the raid, waitlist members will be called to join the raid in the order in which they joined the waitlist (with adjustments for LDs as necessary). If you are in the waitlist group and are called to join the raid as space becomes available, and you do not join the raid (whether afk or otherwise), you will not be given dkp for the raid. If you are invited to join the raid from the waitlist group (or otherwise), and do not then make it to the raidforce (i.e., actually present with the raid participants) before a named mob is first engaged by the raid, you will not be eligible to bid on loot from that mob (but will be eligible to bid on all loot starting with the next mob thereafter).

    * Waitlisted members must join the raid waitlist group with the character they are planning to bring to the raid. This also means that if the character joining the waitlist is an alt, they must meet the alt requirements for participating in that raid.

    * Members must be flagged for the content that we are raiding, or be eligible to join via 85/15, to be eligible to join the waitlist and receive dkp (i.e., you must have your signets done if we are raiding CoA and you want to join the waitlist).

    * In order to get dkp credit for being on the waitlist, you must join the waitlist a reasonable period of time before the raid ends (just as you would need to do if there was no waitlist and you logged on and joined the raid late). There is no fixed time for this, given that raid durations and end-times can vary, but a good rule of thumb would be for members to join the waitlist more than 30 minutes before the end of the raid to get dkp credit. The officers and WC will, however, take into account appropriate circumstances in applying this rule.
BID PROCESS
  • * All bid calls and bid announcements will be made in the MLF loot channel.

    * Members will have a short amount of time after the loot has been linked to the raid to review the loot items and consider their bids. As always, members are encouraged to know their available dkp points in advance of the calls for bids to be assured that they are able to get their bids in in a timely manner.

    * Bid calls will then begin, and will look something like this:

Bids now on [loot_item_1] - closing in 30
Bids now on [loot_item_1] - closing in 20
Bids now on [loot_item_1] - closing in 10
    Bids closed

    * If no Active Mains (i.e., eligible to bid per our dkp rules) have bid during that timeframe, we'll repeat the call for bids for Inactive Mains and Initiates (Active Mains can also bid during this call if they missed bidding on the first call). If no Inactive Mains or Initiates (or Active Mains) bid, we'll repeat the call for bids for alts (all others can also bid during this call if they missed bidding on the previous calls).

    * If nobody bids during any of the loot calls, the loot coordinator may shout for /random, you will have 30 seconds to roll, and may roll for your character in attendance at that raid (main or alt). Late rolls will not count.

    * Note that if an alt is present at a raid at the RL/WC's request, that player may bid on behalf of their main as if they were an Active Main at the raid, as long as it is feasible to get their main to the loot in a timely manner.

    * You may win two items per raid, maximum one item per mob.

    * Spell runes from a non-current expansion will not count against the two item per raid, one item per mob limits. Note that in order to be eligible to bid on a spell rune, you must be of a minimum level such that you are able to mem/scribe the spell at that time.

    * For those of you using audio triggers, we will try to preface announcing the linked loot with "Loot is", and we will try to call out bid requests starting with "Bids now", if you want to add those phrases to your audio trigger files. (See the Tango post in the Lightfighters Lounge for those of you using Tango and wanting trigger comands for those phrases.) Note, however, that this is for convenience purposes only, and if a loot coordinator does not use these trigger phrases, you will still be responsible for monitoring the loot channel to determine when bids are due.
WINNING BIDS
Vickrey Style Bidding:

The item is awarded to highest bidder at a price equal to the second-highest bid. In other words, a winner pays less than the highest bid. If, for example, bidder A bids 100pts, bidder B bids 150pts, and bidder C bids 200pts; bidder C would win, however he would only pay the price of the second-highest bid, namely 150.

One wonders why anyone would choose this method to auction goods. It seems obvious that a seller would make more money by using a first-price auction, but, in fact, that has been shown to be untrue. Bidders fully understand the rules and modify their bids as circumstances dictate. In the case of a Vickrey auction, bidders adjust upward. No one is deterred out of fear that he will pay too high a price. Aggressive bidders receive sure and certain awards but pay a price closer to market consensus. The price that winning bidder pays is determined by competitors' bids alone and does not depend upon any action the bidder undertakes. Less bid shading occurs because people don't fear winner's curse*. Bidders are less inclined to compare notes before an auction.

* Winners Curse: Paying more for item than its value. A winner is suddenly faced with the realization that other participants estimated a lower market value for the item. You win but really lose because your profits decrease (a phyrric victory). The winner is the bidder who made the largest positive error in his valuation. The losers lose the item, but not any money/points. Anyone winning a bid against experts should wonder why the experts bid less. In auctions in which no bidder is sure of the worth of the good being auctioned, the winner is the bidder who made the highest guess. If bidders have reasonable information about the worth of the item, then the average of all the guesses is likely to be correct. The winner, however, offered the bid furthest from the actual value.

Example:
Leiph has 170 points. Jorrell has 160 points. Leiph bids 150 points; Jorrell bids 100 points. Leiph has high bid and Jorrell has second highest bid. Leiph wins the item with a deduction of 100 points from his “bank”.

In case of a tie where the 2 high bids are the same amount, the high bid amount will be the amount of points deducted.

Example (Tie):

Leiph has 170 points. Jorrell has 160 points. They both bid 150 points. Leiph will get the drop and 150 points will be subtracted from 170 and Leiph will be down to 20 points.

If two of the same item drop from one mob, then the bidders with the highest and second highest bids will win the items, and both will be charged the bid of the second highest bidder.

PASSING
  • * If you are the announced winner of an item and then decide that you wish to pass the item, the item will be offered in succession to the next highest bidders (2nd highest, then 3rd highest, etc.) until either a bidder accepts the pass, or no bidder accepts.

    * If a bidder accept the pass, (1) the accepting bidder pays the points bid by the next highest bidder after the accepting bidder, and (2) the original winning bidder pays a fixed penalty of 45 dkp.

    * If the accepting bidder is the lowest bidder for the item, the accepting bidder will pay the points it bid. If no other bidder accepts the pass, the original announced winning bidder must keep the winning bid, loot the item and pay the points of the 2nd highest bidder.
Example 1: X bids 100, Y bids 75, Z bids 50. X wins, decides to pass, Y accepts the pass. Y pays 50 dkp (the bid by the next highest bidder, Z), and X pays the 45 dkp penalty.

Example 2: X bids 100, Y bids 75, Z bids 50. X wins, decides to pass, Y and Z elect not to accept the pass. X pays 75 and loots the item.

Please keep in mind that this rule is in place to allow for passing in the case of honest mistakes or altruistic motives (e.g., bid on wrong item, realized item would be better off in the hands of another bidder, etc.), and is not intended to be used to allow members to get a free look at what they might have to pay before deciding to commit to their bid.
