Techy help if possible

Post by Kibishii »

Hey everyone,

Frost here taking over Kib's personality for a sec. I have a tech question I was wondering if anyone could answer. We live in an apartment with few phone outlets. I put in a two-way splitter into one phone jack to have a cord to computer and one to phone. Now we have satellite service and I hooked up a 3 way splitter but we noticed a huge slowdown in internet speed and then we decided to try a direct line from comp modem into phone jack and it was even faster than with the two way splitter.

Long and short is that I am wondering if a wireless phone jack would be our best bet. Thinking of hooking the satellite receiver and telephone up to the wireless phone jack receiver and the internet into the base unit Anyone familiar with these items or know if the internet connection will still be split/slow? Any advice is greatly appreciated! We have a DSL connection atm. TYTY in advance!

Unless you're going to rent a bunch of pay per view movies you actually don't need the satellite system connected to the phone system.

If you do rent pay per view movies you can hook up the phone line and then rent your movie, keep the phone connected while you're running it and then disconnect it.

The only thing the phone line really does is clear the memory in you're sattelite receiver of the movies you're rented.

You can actually rent movies without it being connected to the phone line but after a few movies the receiver memory fills up and you wouldn't be able to rent any more.
Then you'd have to call in and get it cleared while it's connected to the phone line.

You also get mail on your receiver sometimes about up and coming specials (like pay for this football game, or boxing, only $49.95). Nothing really important though.

I haven't had my Satellite receiver connected to the phone line in a coule of years and it doesn't make a bit of difference other than what I've written.

One other thing to add on:

Connect it every month or so for about 5-6 hours. Alot of times there are IOS updates sent to the sattelite.

Do you have DSL filters installed?

The filters I've seen are 1 port out, with one installed for every device, except the DSL modem. I've also seen pictures of DSL filters that have two ports: one for phones, etc and one marked specifically for the DSL modem.

I'm going with Euan on this one.

If DSL is your internet connection, you should have DSL filters installed on every phone jack in the house. If you need an extra split on a specific jack, you need to buy a special phone splitter designed to work with the DSL filters. Alternately, what you could do is this: From the phone jack, use the DSL filter to split off to the DSL modem. The other jack on that filter should be designated for a phone. Find an adapter that will allow you to hook a normal 2-way splitter into the filter in that port.

Realistically, you'd be better off having a phone jack dedicated to the DSL modem. Use a different jack in the house, with a DSL filter, then split it and use really long cables to get access to your satellite TV and extra phone.
