The Moonklaw: Chapter 4

Post by Ayluen »

Chapter 4

&nbsp &nbsp &nbsp &nbsp They left the bar, leaving only as sign that read “Back in ten minutes,” and further more underneath that was crudely carved “probably.” Stouttummy told the two rangers of a “relative” he knew of to be currently be staying at the Felwithe cathedral. So it was decided to travel there first, as paladins are always ready to support a cause that threatens the forces of good of any kind. Felwithe was only a few hours walk away, so they made off immediately after closing the bar.
&nbsp &nbsp &nbsp &nbsp The road was its usual winding self, twisting and turning just as you thought you were heading the right way. Wildlife of all kinds went on with their daily activities without even giving the adventures a second thought. Now naturally all elves are curious, but especially the wood elf. If they see something they don’t know about or wonder what might happen if they did this, an action is defiantly going to be executed without thought of whether it would be harmful or not. About this time, Leiph spied a dim light shining off of the road a few feet. A closer look revealed it to be a pixie, one of the “pests” of Faydark. Furthermore, the rangers’ guild was currently offering rewards for all and any proof of a slain pixie, mostly the dust.
&nbsp &nbsp &nbsp &nbsp Slowly and stealth fully, Leiph un-quivered one of his arrows, in hopes of scoring a fatal blow. The ashwood bow creaked with strain as he pulled the arrow back with the twine, muscles twitching in the arm. He kept one eye closed, as he blocked out all the sounds of the forest, the aroma of the air, the rustle of the leaves. The pixie stopped moving a moment to smell a mushroom, obviously scrounging for food. Leiph drew in a silent breath, paused for a moment before releasing…
&nbsp &nbsp &nbsp &nbsp Just then, like a tornado touching from the clouds, Stouttummy’s stomach began to rumble mightily, the kind that most people find cover for. Ayluen jumped behind a tree; Leiph lost his concentration just for a moment, so that his arrow was launched astray.
&nbsp &nbsp &nbsp &nbsp “BUUUUUUURRRRRUUUURPPPP!” Stouttummy’s mouth wiggled like a worm on a hook from the belches’ vibration.
&nbsp &nbsp &nbsp &nbsp Ayluen peered from the safety of the tree while grasping his nose. Stouttummy shrugged as he said, “Sorry, didn’t mean to let a weak one like that out. Bloody elven wine.”
&nbsp &nbsp &nbsp &nbsp Leiph heard none of this, instead his face turned to horror as the arrow hit the fungi that the pixie was investigating closely. It exploded into a thousand pieces, bits of it landing everywhere, including the now pissed off pixie. A shrill scream followed this, reaching through the lands like a cat having its tail stepped on. “AHHHHHHHIIIIIIEEEEEE! MY SHROOOOOOM!” the sound made a shiver run through the veins of all in the forest. A monk’s meditation in Freeport was interrupted; a magician chanting his spell in Odus lost his concentration, summoning his mother-in law, rather than his usual snack. Sleeper lifted his heavy eyelid out of shear curiosity; and the hundred pixies in the area swarmed Leiph. It was much of a scene that one would see that of bees attacking a stupid person, the only difference was the pixies. At first, just a few flew up, slapping Leiph fiercely, but soon the darkness of the forest seemed to turn to that of pure light. It was horribly blinding, and the situation was desperate. Stouttummy was laughing the entire time, while Ayluen, trying not to get the pixies attention, began to shoot his own arrows at them.
&nbsp &nbsp &nbsp &nbsp Leiph on the other hand, was beginning to know why these were regarded as the “pests” of Faydark. The tiny scratches that normally would mean nothing, were being multiplied by about five hundred times. Each swat the pixies managed to land was like that of a mosquito bite, but the pain soon added up. Leiph drew as much of his sword he could and began blindly swinging at everything and anything that gave off light. Stouttummy, who was almost over with his laughing fit, witnessed as about half of the pixies shifted their attention to several fallen comrades, all with arrows in a head, limb, wing, or other various major organs, and suddenly about faced and charged at Ayluen. Stouttummy began chanting, enough laughing was almost enough. Leiph’s swings were becoming more leisurely every second, and Ayluen was running in circles screaming. Rookies, Stouttummy thought to himself as he slapped a healing spell on the two. This further more, got some of the idle pixies attentions.
&nbsp &nbsp &nbsp &nbsp “Run fer Felwithe ladies!” Stouttummy bellowed as a few more pixies turned towards him. It was quite a scene: two bleeding wood elves, one panicked dwarf, and a few hundred pixies, all running the same direction. By strange chance, a High elf drunk was making his way to Kelethin itself, and paused a second as the three beings scampered past shouting various curses at themselves and the gods. He took a swig of a bottle he had with him, looked up to see the progression of pixies screaming in high pitches, took another swig of the bottle and looked at the label, promptly remarking with a slur, “Good year…”
&nbsp &nbsp &nbsp &nbsp The pixies were gaining ground, as the three’s fatigue began to give in. Breaths became heavy, and an ironic death seemed near. As they continued to run, a fork in the road appeared, one going straight, the other off to the left. Ayluen turned his head to the side, too tired to ask Stouttummy.
&nbsp &nbsp &nbsp &nbsp “Err…uhoh…er, lads, I fergot which way to go,” the panic turned to terror. Ayluen glanced at the roads, and took off to the left, “This way!” he ordered. Both Leiph and Stouttummy followed, in no place to make criticisms. The path went straight ahead, and the fresh smell of some food wafted near.
&nbsp &nbsp &nbsp &nbsp “That smell! We must be near Felwithe!” Leiph cried in hope and exhaust. They clambered toward a hill, and became miserable as its steepness took its toll on their gradually increasing fatigue. The three speed up best as they could, rounding the top of the hill, flying directly into an orc camp. Both parties were terribly surprised; four orcs playing cards while waiting for their food to cook, three panicked adventures, and the pixies bringing up the rear. Time seemed to pause for a moment, the orcs murmured at each other, Leiph, Ayluen, and Stouttummy hastily glanced at each other, and the pixies screamed over the hill attacking all parties. The three took off back the way they came, with orcs following, neither caring about each other. The pixies were mad, and desperate to take it out on all which they saw. When the fork came, the orcs desperately glanced at the wood elfs and dwarf, not caring where it took them as long as they escaped the pixie hell. This time, they turned to the left, which was the path leading straight, hopefully which lead to Felwithe. They continued, running on pure adrenaline, knowing that if that ran out, so would their lives in a horrible way. The minute that passed seemed like an hour, and the hopes of succeeding seemed slim. And to make those hopes even lower, yet another split in the road neared, this one too going left and straight. Hopes sunk to the bottom of their toes, and this time they looked at Stouttummy, who shrugged and took off to the left. Ayluen and Leiph hesitated.
&nbsp &nbsp &nbsp &nbsp “Last time we went left-,” they began. “Ear lads, ye can’t go wrong twice!” Stouttummy finished, making an uncertain point.
They both shrugged, and followed him, silently praying to any and every god. The road veered to the right, and up a hill; thoughts of the last hill surely made the three shudder. The hill was much larger, and slowed them down immensely. The orcs were only a few feet back, and the pixies were just now turning onto the new path. The three sighed in relief as they saw the towers of Felwithe, and became alarmed to only see two guards lightly chatting about something to do with pay. The two guards paused a second, as they saw the three run past screaming about orcs and pixies, looked at each other, and drew steel. The orcs rounded the top of the hill, running straight into the blades of the High elven guards, dying with gurgling breaths, but all seeming rather pleased at their fate. The guards once again looked at each other, and slowly turned their heads to the shrill squealing of a few pixies, unknown to them the ten faster ones. They pixies charged, daggers and fists at ready, and the guards barely had enough time to kick of the severed orcs from their long swords. They pixies blows bounced harmlessly from the armor, and the two sentinels quickly finished the first five. They grinned; all this was to them was cutting steak with a knife, until the other two hundred cleared the hill.
&nbsp &nbsp &nbsp &nbsp Panicking themselves, “HELLLLLLLLLLP! SEND GUARDS! NOW! NOW! NOW!”

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

&nbsp &nbsp &nbsp &nbsp Meanwhile in Felwithe the three companions were resting on the side of the bridge to keep out of the way of the guards hurrying to the gate and to catch their breath as well. One of the guards who was much shorter then the others as well as having a long braided beard, stopped and hurried towards the injured rangers and Stouttummy, who was still chuckling between laughing fits. As he got closer he pulled off his gauntlets and began to cast a healing spell on Leiph, who was still bleeding immensely.
“ What did cha’ youngins get yourselves into? I haven’t seen anyone this beat up since the last orc raid we had about 20 years ago.” Leiph muttered something under his breath while Ayluen replied, “Leiph shot a pixie and caused them to swarm us. Seems he can’t aim an arrow with both hands and divine guidance.”
Stouttummy became all too quiet, and blinked a couple of times before looking up into a huge yellow-toothed smile.
“Crohan!” Stouttummy bellowed at the top of his lungs, quickly embracing the titled dwarf.
“Aye, how’s it be for yea Stout? Brell sure as be kind to me!” Crohan seemed jolly like most dwarfs with a purse fat enough to buy ten kegs.
“Ah doing good laddy, let me introduce yea to some fine young ‘uns. This is Ayluen, and Leiph, both be rangers,” Stouttummy gestured to the two confused elves.
“Um hey Stouttummy,” Leiph asked to the side as Crohan fiercely shook Ayluen’s hand, “how is this guy related to you?”
Crohan grinned even larger if that was possible as Stouttummy answered, “Well this here is my cousins second adopted once removed sisters uncle’s bunk buddy from his paladin training.”
“So what does that make you two?” Ayluen asked doubtfully.
“Absolutely nothing but drinking relatives!” Crohan clambered proudly, if one could be proud about something such as that.
“But you said he was your rel-,” Ayluen paused, “er…never mind…I don’t care at this point.”
“Fear not laddy, he is as stout as I, yet ten times more dependable.” Stouttummy offered.
“Eh, speaking of which, what brought the three of yea here? Been naggin at me noggin since I saw yea ugly face,” Stouttummy chuckled until he noticed everyone starring at him.
Ayluen sighed, Leiph looked at the ground, and Stouttummy sniffled from Crohan’s last remark. The short paladin shrugged, and asked again. This time Ayluen pulled his breath together enough to speak.
“Kelethin is going to be under attack by orcs sometime very soon. We need your help.”
Crohan straightened his face, “Give me an idea on numbers.”
Ayluen glanced at Leiph, then Stouttummy, “Anywhere from a hundred to Tunare only knows what. Quite frankly we have no idea. I tried to get to Kelethin’s elders to warn them, but the guards laughed at my hunch and turned me away. The only person who would listen was Leiph and Stout here.”
“Wait er’ a minute,” Crohan stated with concern, “you mean to tell me this is just an instinct or sentiment? So this could be false?!?”
“Well…” Ayluen paused with a blank look on his face, “yes…you might say that. But I can promise you I saw a dark elf that looked much like an ambassador enter castle Crushbone with their leader.”
“WHATS THAT LAD?” Crohan’s eyes grew wide, “This is serious! A dark elf in the Faydark is never a good sign, count me in…except, I think we are a little out numbered.”
“Not if we strike first,” Stouttummy stood and spoke for the first time since Crohan’s comment. “If we sneak in and wear down their forces we could easily prevent this from occurring”
“Aye, I hope so, and I seriously doubt any others as far as a guild would help with the matter without proof.” Crohan shifted on his feet while playing with his dented scabbard. The four looked at each other gloomily and stood to search for others that might help. Crohan suggested attempting to recruit a person of the pure arts, and Ayluen had just the one in mind, especially with Crohan’s purse at hand.

Hope you enjoyed it, let me know whatcha think!

<img src="http://home.attbi.com/~boswellbrian/wsb ...

Ayluen Moonklaw:Tunare's Bounty Hunter

51st Pathfinder

Mystical Lightfighters

Morell-Thule Server
