The Moonklaw: Chapter 2

Post by Ayluen »

Chapter 2

&nbsp &nbsp &nbsp &nbsp The atmosphere in Kelethin’s most popular bar, the Heartwood Tavern, was the same spirited, drunken elf jolly. Patrons of all types sat at various tables, sipping or quaffing quarts of dwarven ale, some of the best alcohol in Faydwer. Even though the city had guards, the bar insisted on hiring its own, more for show than function. However, the dwarves they hired could easily break up any bar fight; when fighting at eye level normal men dropped like sacks of flour.
&nbsp &nbsp &nbsp &nbsp Ayluen, Leiph, and a few others from the bunker snuck in from the back as usual, leaving a tip for Stouttummy, the owner of the bar. Stouttummy, a priest of Brell, was an odd dwarf, often complaining about the light of day, and obviously preferring the darkness. His short red hair, and spiky beard bragged of his blocky features. When he talked, his one eye seemed to twitch as his other tried to focus…even though he had completely lost it. Even with his powerful priest spells, he could not heal his wound from the one lady he went too far with.
&nbsp &nbsp &nbsp &nbsp After bribing their way in, they quickly found a table in the corner, and ordered several pints. The meaty-breasted waitress soon returned carrying a tray of drinks, bending over slightly to reveal more in hopes of a better tip.
It worked.
&nbsp &nbsp &nbsp &nbsp The sweet, thick smell of the ale wafted to Ayluen’s nostrils, an invisible invitation. He accepted, and drowned the mug in one swallow, sighing in relief as he slammed it down on the table. The split second sensation of burning was soon drowned by yet another ale, giving little chance for bad aftertaste.
&nbsp &nbsp &nbsp &nbsp Ayluen let another sigh escape his breath. Ever since his first day of joining Faydark Champions, he hadn’t had a single minute to relax. His constant training had the fury of a berserker, something he couldn’t quite handle. But, he was continually reminded of his great, inherited talent, of which he could master if only he would act correctly. But the correct way of acting in his ideas was to live his life to the fullest.
“You know,” Leiph started, “I think the guild is about to send us on our first assignment. In fact, I’ve overheard some of our masters talking, and well…they expect quite a lot from you.”
Ayluen’s only response was a slight huff of air
“Heya bro, sorry for bringing it up, thought a heads up might help ya out,” Leiph replied casually like Ayluen owed him his life.
“I know, but it’s hard to get away from that damnable place. They work my arse off, and no matter how hard I try, it’s never good enough. But I’ll show those old farts soon, they will be so dumbfounded that their wrinkles won’t hold em up any longer!” A sharp laugh followed this, pointing out that one too many ales had be downed.
Leiph wore a concerned face, “Hey, um…I think you had better slow down on the ale. I mean if you drink too much, well…maybe we better call it-”
A glass bottle disintegrated against the back of Ayluen’s head, cutting off Leiph’s sentence and forcing him to dodge tiny shards of shiny glass. Ayluen, seemed suddenly sober, and pushed to his full height leaving the sticky liquid on his scalp. His eyes shinned of fury, and he quickly scanned the cheering patrons who began throwing anything and everything their hands could grasp. One of the drunks came straight at Ayluen.
A makeshift club fashioned of a stool leg came down, and the patron squealed in glee. Ayluen parried with his left arm, and quickly took the drunken man down with a hook in the gut from his right fist. Before the man hit the ground, Ayluen quickly stepped on the man's chest, pushing a grunt out of his lungs, and continued his stride to meet the next attacker. This one must have spent the entire evening in the bar, as his entire body reeked of ale and something else Ayluen didn’t want to think of. The man wobbled a fist toward Ayluen’s face and presented a tooth less smile that housed brown gums. Ayluen easily dogged the shaky attempt, and returned the favor with his left leg. Expecting a landing, Ayluen was caught off guard when the man jumped to the side, and delivered a blow to Ayluen’s temple. Red suddenly blurred his vision, and his eye stung as the blood ran into it. Ayluen tried to focus his double vision and barely managed to evade the next intended blow. Now aware that his opponent was no joke, he decided to attempt another approach, this time more defensive. The man swung clumsily, and Ayluen dodged the blow, bringing his arm up to parry the next most likely blow. The man seized the chance at the opening the planned parry left, and the reeking patron came up to Ayluen’s side ready to strike. But the man didn’t see Ayluen’s left leg come from above and smash his head into the gnarled oaken planks, and the crunching sounds that erected as head hit wood only proved the blow was no joke.
Just as he was about to engage his next victim, Ayluen quickly noticed the unnatural light building up in the corner of the room. Out of the corner of his eye, he could make out what only could be an elf talented in magic, but of what college he could not identify. Instinctively he jumped behind the nearest table, and braced himself for whatever might come. Instead of an impact however, a strident sizzle filled the room, and the previous chaos of the fight was silenced. In pure wonder, he peeked around an edge of his table to see Leiph and several others petrified. Puzzled and curious by the eerie silence, Ayluen stepped safe of his cover to see the caster already enjoying another drink. Shady for a high elf, Ayluen was surprised to receive a nod from him, exploiting his fears. Ayluen obliged, and took a seat across from the odd man.
“Well,” the high elf smirked, “This is the first time a wood elf wasn’t stupid enough to fall for my spell.”
Trying to keep his temper at bay, Ayluen replied, “Well, I’m not your average bear. What college of casting do you follow? I’ve never seen a spell of the such!”
“That’s because you’re an idiot,” he tauntingly replied.
“Now wait just a minute! Who are you calling an idiot?” Ayluen could feel his face turning red. This elf wasn’t only a caster, but a cocky one.
“Take a guess oak brain. By the way, to answer your question, it’s a stun spell,” he casually remarked, as he indolently lounged against his seat, as if he had practiced it a hundred times.
“I’ve seen plenty of stun spells, but not a single one that could effect more than one person! You must be a powerful priest!” Ayluen guessed.
“Or I’m not woody,” he said, mocking Ayluen’s accent. “They call us Enchanters, however, mass stunning is not my specialty, but it does help when you’re trying to have some quiet time after a hard days work.”
Ayluen huffed gruffly, “Well, Mr. High and Mighty, might I have the honor of you name?”
The high elf grinned, sly and cunningly, “Qumin, Qumin Crystalwind.”
When the polite response didn’t come, Ayluen only copied the smirk best as possible and stuck his nose up high, “Ayluen, Ayluen Moonklaw.”
“Well Mr. Moonklaw, it seems we have an acquaintance…however time is short, I must be off. Perhaps we will meet again.” Without another word, Qumin stood and left the table, pausing at the tavern’s door long enough to snap his fingers.
As if time suddenly begun, the figures unfroze and continued into the wreaking havoc that was amuck previously. Ayluen seized Leiph’s loose tunic, yanking him down in time to miss a bottle of brandy, and catching it with his free hand instead.
“Lets get out of here before they send the dwarfs in our direction!” Ayluen yelled at his friend, trying to be heard over the roaring crowd.
“Agreed!” And as simple as that they left, one bottle of brandy heavy.

Back at the bunkhouse, Leiph rammed Ayluen through the small window and sent him sprawling on to the floor. A sharp curse followed the slight thump that his head made when it the hard wood planks.
“Shhhhhh,” Leiph hissed. “We don’t want anyone knowing we weren’t sleeping!”
“Oh, we wouldn’t want that,” Ayluen sarcastically began. “We might get, in,” he paused long enough to put a hand over his mouth and gasp, “…trouble!”
“I swear! If you don’t hu-” Leiph couldn’t finish before the sound of feet drew near outside.
“Hurry up you lumbering troll! If they catch us, I’ll blame it on you!”
Hurriedly scrambling past the window, they both clambered to their bunks and hastily drew the scrappy wool blankets over and up to their chins.

Hope Ya enjoyed it!

<img src="http://home.attbi.com/~boswellbrian/wsb ... ter>
Ayluen Moonklaw:Tunare's Bounty Hunter
51st Pathfinder
Mystical Lightfighters
