The Moonklaw: Chapter 1

Post by Ayluen »

Chapter 1

&nbsp &nbsp &nbsp &nbsp The blade came down fast, shrieking toward its foe, willing to take life. The world seemed to slow as Ayluen easily dodged his opponent’s attack. Seeking an opening, Ayluen quickly cut towards the younger elf’s torso, feigning at the last moment. Sensing the false attack, the sparing partner twisted to the right, sweeping his sword towards Ayluen’s neck. But what was Ayluen’s neck now was air, and the younger elf soon realized it as his knees buckled against the flat of Ayluen’s blade. The opponent cried out in pain, masking his actions as Ayluen savored his minor victory. Inspecting his opponent, Ayluen quickly recognized that this so called “elf”, was actually a half elf, although his traits favored elven features more than his human blood. Brown hair, trimmed to shoulder length, blue eyes that burned as if a fire were behind them, and clean-cut features let Ayluen know that he was lucky to won this portion of his training battles.
“Had enough yet?” Ayluen snickered.
“Never in my life,” His opponent responded in a furious but amusing way.
“Well, shall I bruise your bottom again pal?” Ayluen chuckled more to himself than to his partner..
“HA! It is you who shall leave with a bruising!” the half elf launched back tauntingly..
“How many times do I have to prove my superior swordsmanship?”
“If you don’t shut up, I swear I’ll kick you in your arse so hard you-”
“What in Tunare’s name do you think you two are DOING!?!” The furious taunting quickly ceased as their elders voice resounded over the bickering.
Ayluen thought quickly, “Uh...we were…um…getting to know each other?” An orc wouldn’t even be stupid enough to believe that, Ayluen thought and knew he was caught.
“Well why don’t you two get to know each other, as you scrub the bunk houses planks?” The opponent shot a glare at Ayluen that would have burned him to a crisp if his eyes were made of the fire that lay beneath them.

* * * * * * * * * * * *

&nbsp &nbsp &nbsp &nbsp This was the third time this week Ayluen found himself on the all too familiar wooden planks of his bunkhouse, this was the first time he had company however. He considered his options, pondering and evaluating his new acquaintance.
Ayluen broke the silence first, “Hey, I’m sorry I got you in this mess.”
No response.
“Hey! I’m talking to you!”
“I know.” Ayluen triumphed in his mind as he finally got a response.
“Then why wont you talk to me? I tried to apologize, the least you could do in turn is answer me!”
The half elf stopped his scrubbing fury, “Cuz I don’t want to make you cry!”
Ayluen snorted, “Well, at least my mother isn’t an orc, HALFBREED!”
The half elf grinned unexpectedly, “That she may be, but I would be ashamed to admit to be related to you after you said we were getting to know each other to our trainer! I mean, honestly, not even an orc would be that stupid!”
Not able to hold it any longer, Ayluen began laughing, and soon found his new acquaintance doing the same.
“Look, it seems we started off on the wrong foot, I’m Leiph.”
Ayluen nodded, showing his agreement, “Nice to meet you, I’m Ayluen.”
Leiph’s eyes became wide, “You mean Ayluen…as in Ayluen Moonklaw! Son of the Everai Moonklaw?”
“Yeah, that’s me” Ayluen replied unexcitedly.
“Woah! My mother has told me all about your father! No wonder you’re the first person to beat me!”
Ayluen sighed, not particularly enjoying the unconditional fame, “Well, just don’t make a big deal out of it. So I’m guessing you know all about me, but what’s your story?”
Leiph’s grins quickly faded, “Well, like you, I have never met my father, in fact, my own mother can’t even remember anything about him. I’ve lived my entire life trying to piece things together through research and information, however I still have not been able to find my father or anyone who knows him. So I figured the only thing I could do, was travel, make something of my life, and if I found anything of his whereabouts along the way…great. But if not, I won’t be crushed.”
“That’s pretty bad, I’ll tell you something though. Even if you never physically met your father, you actually have,” Ayluen told Leiph.
Leiph shook his head, not fully understanding, “What are you saying?”
Clearing his throat, Ayluen continued, “Well you see, many believe that every time someone is born, they mentally connect with their father and mother, sometimes allowing certain traits, abilities, or thoughts to be passed on. Usually when a powerful elf dies, such as a priest, they know how to transfer this same connection to others not related to them, thus keeping some of our past greatly specific and alive among us today!”
“So you’re saying that I am mentally linked with my father?”
“Exactly, or say, that he isn’t alive, then he has already passed his knowledge to you. Its just a matter of finding it in your own mind.”
Leiph smiled, comprehending what was being said.
“I like the sound of that.”
“As do I…”
&nbsp &nbsp &nbsp &nbsp
&nbsp &nbsp &nbsp &nbsp * * * * * * * * * * * *

&nbsp &nbsp &nbsp &nbsp Ayluen walked the beaten path in front of him, breathing in the thick, moist air around him. The trees seemed to embrace him as he hiked calmly. Birds called to their mates, wolves howled to their packs, and the forest went about its normal activities. Rays of the bright afternoon sun shone on the path in gleaming circles, making the otherwise pitch black slightly less dark. Worn, pressed dirt lead Ayluen to his destination, one that he abruptly realized he had no idea what it was. His heart began the thump as he sped up, becoming conscious that he was possibly lost. Blur hindered his vision, and sweat stung his eyes like an angered bixie as his head began to painfully spin. Clumsily, he stumbled forward, brushing the occasional branch or boulder. Suddenly, the path split in two directions, two different paths Ayluen had never seen nor remembered. On one path, the ground was fertile, harnessing flowers of every color and supporting life of amazing quantities. But the path on the right, was unnaturally dark, gloomy, and unappealing. Jagged trees of jet-black wood stabbed at the open air, which was thick with thousands bats, loudly shrieking at nothing in particular. With out any warning, the air in front of him shimmered, and a being materialized feet from him. Hazy in appearance, the robed being wavered as a ripple in a puddle of water, making his details difficult to see, forcing Ayluen to strain his eyes. The world moved slowly, and twisted unnaturally, threatening Ayluen’s balance. The being’s eyes glowed a fiery, abnormal yellow as he simply said, “You must choose…”
Ayluen immediately woke from the dream, shedding a cold sweat. What in Tunare’s name was that about? Those paths…that being…what…are they…
No matter how hard he could try, they words continued to echo in his mind even as he violently shook from someone’s grasp. Shaking off the feeling the best he could, Ayluen heard a quick whisper next to his ear, “Hey! Ayluen! You up yet?”
&nbsp &nbsp &nbsp &nbsp Ayluen recognized Leiph’s voice, “Yeah, I’m up.”
“Hey, me and some of the guys are going out tonight, want to come along?”
Ayluen tried to put the eerie feeling aside from his dream, “Yea, why not.”

-Ayluen Moonklaw
52nd Ranger of Tunare

Edited by: <A HREF=http://pub78.ezboard.com/bmysticallight ... >Ayluen at: 7/27/03 9:44 am
